What is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery, often simply referred to as Mohs surgery, is an advanced skin cancer treatment that allows for the complete removal of cancerous cells while minimizing the damage to healthy skin tissue. Using microscope technology and precise surgical techniques, we are able to carefully remove cancerous skin layer by layer. With Mohs surgery, we can ensure that we eliminate all cancerous tissue without removing layers of skin that are unaffected. Dr. Reina of Baldone Reina Dermatology specializes in reconstruction, so she can minimize damage and repair the skin for optimal cosmetic results.

How Much Does Mohs Surgery Cost?

If you require Mohs surgery at Baldone Reina Dermatology, you will first have a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists. During this consultation, we will assess your current condition in order to determine the best approach for your skin cancer treatment. In most cases, the cost of skin cancer treatment is covered by health insurance. After developing your treatment plan and determining your health insurance coverage, we will be able to provide you with the cost of treatment.

What is the Mohs Surgery Procedure Like?

Mohs surgery is an in-office procedure that takes a few hours to perform. The treatment is performed using local anesthesia to minimize any discomfort that may occur during treatment. First, we will remove the visible portion of the tumor or cancerous growth. After removing a layer of skin, it will be examined under a microscope. By viewing the removed skin up-close, we will be able to tell if there are cancerous cells remaining in the next layer of skin. If there are, we will continue to remove the affected areas of skin. This process is repeated until there are no cancerous cells remaining.

What is the Recovery Period Like Following Mohs Surgery?

The recovery period following your Mohs surgery will depend on the location and size of the treatment area. Most patients are able to return to normal activities shortly after their appointment. The treatment area can take several weeks to heal, so we may give you post-operative instructions to ensure you have a smooth recovery. However, this healing process should not prevent you from participating in your usual activities.
