What is What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is a revolutionary type of surgery for treating skin cancer, including squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. It uses a special microscope to examine thin layers of tissue to identify abnormal and cancerous cells.

The Benefits of Mohs Surgery

  • More conservative because only abnormal skin cells are removed, resulting in less tissue loss.
  • More cosmetically pleasing because the conservative approach of Mohs surgery ensures minimal scarring.
  • More comfortable since most Mohs procedures can be performed with just local anesthetic.
  • More effective, with a success rate of up to 99% for initial skin cancers and up to 94% for recurring skin cancers, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.

When To Visit Your Dermatologist

Schedule a dermatology visit if you notice potentially abnormal skin areas, such as:

  • Red, scaly skin
  • Open sores that do not heal
  • Large moles with a diameter exceeding 6 millimeters
  • Asymmetrical or irregular moles
  • Poorly defined moles with ragged borders
  • New or regrown moles after removal
  • Moles that change in size, shape, or color

What To Expect During Mohs Surgery

Mohs surgery is typically performed outpatient, with no hospital stay required. Your dermatologist will numb the surgical area with local anesthetic and remove a thin tissue layer. This tissue will be examined under a microscope, and if abnormal cells are found, the process will repeat until only healthy tissue remains.

What is the Recovery Period Like Following Mohs Surgery?

The recovery period following your Mohs surgery will depend on the location and size of the treatment area. Most patients are able to return to normal activities shortly after their appointment. The treatment area can take several weeks to heal, so we may give you post-operative instructions to ensure you have a smooth recovery. However, this healing process should not prevent you from participating in your usual activities.
