What is Botox®?

Botox Logo

Botox® is an injectable treatment that is used to diminish the appearance of facial wrinkles. The Botox® formula is composed of botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator that relaxes facial muscles by blocking nerve signals that cause them to contract. Using Botox®, patients can target wrinkle-causing muscles, reducing the appearance of forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet and frown lines. At Baldone Reina Dermatology, we also offer Botox® as a hyperhidrosis treatment option.

What is the Botox® Treatment Like?

Before your Botox® treatment, we will apply ice to minimize any pain and bruising that may occur during the injection process. Then, injections are performed in and around the desired treatment area. The number of injections required will depend on the area being treated as well as your desired results. A Botox® treatment takes less than 10 minutes, making it a great option for patients with a busy schedule.

What is the Recovery Period Like Following Botox®?

After your Botox® treatment, you may experience swelling, bruising or sensitivity in the treatment area. These are common effects of treatment, and typically fade within a day or two. Despite these minor side effects, you will be able to return to work and all other normal activities immediately following your appointment. There is no downtime or recovery period involved after Botox®.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Botox®?

Once the Botox® formula takes effect in the muscles, your results will become visible, which usually happens within a week. You may begin to notice some results as soon as three to five days post-treatment, with the peak effect at two weeks. The results from Botox® typically last between three to six months, after which time, many patients choose to have additional treatments to maintain their results.

Botox® FAQs

Botox® is a great treatment for patients who wish to address the fine lines and deep wrinkles around their forehead, brows, and outer eyes. Ideal candidates for Botox® are in good general health and have realistic expectations of their desired results. If you’re unsure whether Botox® is right for you, we encourage you to come in for a private consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists.

The three areas we most commonly treat with Botox® include the:

  • Forehead
  • Brows
  • Outer eyes

Botox® is also a popular treatment for hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating in the underarms and hands.

Botox® is most effective in treating the fine lines and wrinkles around the upper third of the face. This is because the wrinkles around the forehead, brows, and eyes are typically caused by repeated facial expressions. We like to call these wrinkles “action wrinkles.” Botox® treats these “action wrinkles” by temporarily relaxing the muscles in the treated areas.

Our board-certified dermatologists recommend you stop taking any blood-thinning medications prior to your Botox® appointment. These medications include Aspirin, ibuprofen, and Excedrin. We also recommend patients refrain from drinking alcohol a few days before Botox® treatments.

Botox® typically takes about five days to activate within the body following treatment. Once you begin to see the effects of your Botox® treatment, these results may last between four and six months depending on your body’s natural aging processes. We typically recommend patients come in every three to four months to maintain their desired results for the long term.
