What is Cancer Screening?
Cancer screening is a method of analyzing and testing the skin to determine
if skin cancer is present. Cancer screenings typically begin with the visual
observation of the skin. We may check common problem areas, such as the neck,
face and arms, or any areas where a patient has specific concerns. A full body skin exam may be recommended for a thorough cancer screening process. If we find
any areas of concern, we will perform a biopsy on the affected skin to
determine if it is cancerous. The results from this test will determine how we
proceed with treatment.
How Much Does a Cancer Screening Cost?

The cost of the screening will depend on a variety of factors, including the methods of testing involved and if further treatment is required. In most cases, cancer screening is covered by health insurance. When Should I Have a Cancer Screening?
If you have spotted any unusual growths on the skin, you should schedule a cancer screening at your earliest convenience. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that patients receive annual skin cancer screenings in order to catch skin cancer as early as possible. If you are older or frequently exposed to sunlight, regular skin cancer screenings are even more important.
What is an “Unusual” Skin Growth?
If you have noticed an unusual growth on the skin, you should seek a skin cancer screening in order to ensure that your skin is not affected. These growths are most often in the form of moles, which may be newly formed or changing in appearance. Following the ABCDE rule is a good way to determine if you need to seek the opinion of a dermatologist.
- Asymmetry – If you have a mole that is widely varied in shape, color or other features, it may be a cancerous growth. Symmetrical moles are usually harmless, but should still be monitored for other changes.
- Border irregularities – If the shape of your mole is bumpy, rigid or otherwise poorly defined, it may need to be examined. Harmless moles are generally rounded and have a clear shape to them.
- Color – Most moles have an even, dark pigment to them. If your mole has multiple shades and colors, especially red, blue or white, you should get it looked at.
- Diameter – Most harmless moles are under 6mm in diameter, or about the size of a pencil eraser. Small moles may still be cancerous, but if you spot a mole larger than this, you may want to visit a dermatologist.
- Evolving – If you notice any changes in a mole or lesion, such as changes in size, color or shape, you should visit a dermatologist for a skin cancer screening.
