Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in Covington, LA

Photodynamic therapy uses light-activated medications to provide an effective treatment for a range of skin health concerns. At Baldone Reina Dermatology, we offer PDT to residents of New Orleans, the Northshore, Mandeville and Covington, LA.

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic TherapyPhotodynamic therapy, or PDT, is an advanced skin care treatment that can be used for medical or cosmetic reasons. During PDT, a topical solution is applied to the skin. Light energy then activates this medication which destroys cancerous skin cells and rejuvenates the skin. Photodynamic therapy can be used for the following concerns:

  • Pre-cancerous growths
  • Uneven skin tone or texture
  • Acne
  • Signs of aging

How Much Does Photodynamic Therapy Cost?

If you choose to undergo photodynamic therapy at Baldone Reina Dermatology, you will first have a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists. During this consultation, we will assess your current condition and your treatment goals in order to determine the best approach for your treatment. In some cases, your treatment may be eligible for coverage by health insurance. Once these variables are considered and your eligibility for insurance coverage is determined, we will be able to provide you with the cost of treatment and any associated fees.

What is Photorejuvenation?

Photorejuvenation is a cosmetic treatment performed with photodynamic therapy. It uses PDT to address wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture and other concerns to enhance the quality of the skin. The photorejuvenation treatment increases cell turnover and stimulates collagen production for long-lasting, effective results.

What is the Photodynamic Therapy Treatment Like?

Before your photodynamic therapy treatment, we will apply a topical solution to the skin. The exact formula used will depend on your reason for treatment. We will then apply light energy to the skin to activate the topical medication. This process will take 45 minutes to an hour, and may cause a heating or tingling sensation in the skin. However, patients generally find the treatment to be mostly comfortable.

What Can I Expect After Photodynamic Therapy?

After your photodynamic therapy treatment your skin may feel dry or sensitive for a few days. Within the first week, your skin may peel or have a red appearance. During this time, it is important to avoid sun exposure to protect the skin from damage. Patients will be able to resume normal activities but typically take some time off of social activities to allow the skin to heal. You can expect to see results within a few weeks. Your results will continue to improve with additional treatments which we typically recommend for optimal results.
